body land becoming
Workshop with Michelle Horacek

The body is a landscape in itself moving within the larger frame of the given surrounding environment. The vertical and horizontal layering of the (historical) landscape invites us to reflect upon our own layers and connection of self and imagination.

Duration:
4 – 7 days

Costs:
Artist Fee (TBN), Studio Space, Materials, Travel, Accommodation (when applicable), Per Diems

Capacity:
5 –12 participants

Description:
This workshop is designed to open deep awareness of the body in itself; and then, in dialogue with its surrounding landscape (urban or rural). On the most basic level the work will aim to awaken an appreciation for our connection to the land, and so to our ancestry.

The workshop will include techniques for freeing expression in the body, and in the creative process. This is an excellent opportunity for artists of any discipline, as we will be connecting various forms of expression including: dance, movement, vocal work, poetry, writing, drawing and sculpture. The work will be focused through meditation practice (both still and moving), and through the practice of Body-Mind Centering, and techniques of Shamanism. The movement training exercises are informed by Japanese Butoh and Improvisation / Play. The overall objective is to open flow, natural impulse, and to develop a wider palette of tools for expression and creation. This work is designed to transform our conception of the link between art practice and life journey, and so the process of becoming.

Participants will be asked to study a landscape that inspires them, in preparation for the workshop.

Michelle Horacek has led workshops and creative process in various capacities for many years. She has worked with children, adults, and professional artists. This workshop is very adaptable to the specific needs of the group, and to the context in which it happens.
